Candida is a comedy written by famous playwright George Bernard shaw , the play is about love, marriage and virtue
. Shaw has depicted the character of candida as a very strong woman , her husband James morell is a clergyman who is very confident man but situations makes him so pitiable at the end where his wife chooses him over marchbanks only because she feels morell is the weakest and the neediest of the two but by choosing morell candida refuses to follow the longing of her own heart though she is a strong woman but she did not have the power to make her own choice because at the time the play was written ,it was unexpected that a woman who is a wife and a mother would leave her husband and go with a younger lover ,moreover shaw has showed candida as an ideal woman and its unanticipated that she would end her marriage and go to an immature poet so candida being a dignified woman chooses commitment . Though in today`s context it would not be considered appalling for a woman to choose a younger partner but shaw`s candida is a different woman of different time though she chooses to stay back with her husband but she makes him realize that its him who is the needy and she is strong enough to walk away and candida also believes that marchbanks who is depicted as a hopeless romantic young poet is able to live without her because he is a sensitive person understands love and that makes him stronger than morell.
