Fundamentals of Astrology

Book Review by: Praveen

Original Author: M. Ramakrishna Bhat
The Base of Vedic Astrology
All the ancient civilizations - in Egypt, Babylonia, India and China when
man the food gatherer became man the thinker the proto-elements of astrology might have been more or less similar. Over a period of time these elements took different shapes till they reached a stage of systemization based on recurring experiences over a long stretch of time. In this process each culture tried to introduce its own knowledge and experience, and this knowledge was passed generation after generation. Possibly, the science of astrology grew around the knowledge of the triad – man, earth and planets.
In India, the way in which Naksatravidya, the science of stars, has been thought of in the Vedic literature shows that it is thought as one of the intellectual attainments. The word Naksatra means star in general as well as asterism in the Zodiac belt. The star groups of Naksatras were referred to as devagrahas. Parts of the body of the primordial being, Prajapati, have extolled in terms of Naksatras. The kalapurasa also has been imagined in much the same way by the later exponents of Indian astrology.
Horasastra or predictive astrology relating horoscope of individuals emphases that Karma and Punarjanma (rebirth) are powerful determinants of life of individual. The individual has to perform good deeds so that he can reap the benefits of good planetary influence in the future birth.
The aim of this ancient discipline is to correct man’s angularities, make him lead a life in conformity with the accepted laws of conduct, emerge psychologically and spiritually and ultimately merge with the source. The Priyaschittas or expiatory rites prescribed suggest that man is no automation in the hands of an inexorable fate. It is the faith of great sages that by self-effort coupled with sincere devotion to God and faith in oneself man can raise above the influence of the environment.
The twelve signs of the Zodiac represent soul-patterns. The solar system has eight dimensions through which the soul passes exhibiting levels of consciousness. The soul of the entity is a part of the universal consciousness and has dwelt in these environs.
The reader is taken step by step from the rudiments viz. the distributions of constellations in the zodiac belt, the planetary hierarchy, calculation of ascendants, affiliations and mutual relations of planets, to the final stage of reading the brighter and darker sides of the subject’s life, his chances of success and failure, their periods, ingress of soul, their mortal coil and its exit from there from.
