change its name to Elan Vital, and then change it again in favour of the Prem Rawat Foundation) and how I escaped four and a half years
later in 1985. I will take you
step by step through the whole brainwashing process so you can see how a cult wraps itself around you completely. It all went wrong for me because I thought I was going on a date – I was not on any kind of religious quest. My story given, the book goes on to tell the cult''s own sordid, controversial story, beginning in India when the
guru usurped leadership of the movement from his older brothers, and how the young Guru Maharaji, was publicly dismissed as a charlatan by his own mother, after marrying an American air hostess and renaming her after a Hindu fertility goddess. My book also presents an
essay explaining just what a religious cult is, and how meditation really works, before finishing with an essay on UFO cults. There are assessments of the cult leader’s insidious semi-official biography, Peace Is Possible, by Andrea Cagan, and an alphabetical glossary on the jargon used by the cult. My transition from Catholic to atheist, to fanatical cult recruit, travelling the World specially to kiss the feet of a man who I believed to be a living incarnation of God, is written with some humour and hopefully some sense of the real horror of the experiences I endured. I hope that my story will help others to recognise the dangers presented by a cult, and that I can provide some information on how to leave a cult and get friends, relatives and loved ones out of such organizations too.
