Research Methods in Education P5.

Article Summary by: foukara

Original Author: Louis Cohen. Larence Mannion and Keith Morrison
Louise Cohen, Laurence Mannion and Keth Maurrice believe that the approach of scientists in looking for the truth is different
from that of laypeople. According to Moulay (1978) people try to understand the environment through experience and reasoning. They also try to understand day to-day problems through a heavy reliance on experience. They base understanding on commonsense, choose the evidence that is consistent with their preassumptions and reject the rest. Contrary to that, scientists construct their theories carefully and systematically. Their explanations of phenomera are deeply entrenched in facts. In addition to this, laypeople do not attempt to control any extraneous sources of influence during the process of explaining an occurence. Scientist are by no means highly conscious about a multiplicity of external causes leading to the materialization of an occurence. They try to identify such causes through the use of different techniques. Therefore, Louise Cohen, Laurence Mannion and Keth Maurrison believe that while laypeople`s concern with relationships are loose, unsystematic and controlled, scientists operate within the circle of a serious professional concern
