Muslim Portraits: Everyday Lives in India

Book Review by: LexIndica

Original Author: Mukulika Banerjee
How do prejudices come into? Why we started to stereotype a person negatively. Muslims in India are facing the same problem.
On the one hand, they will have to keep their life going in spite of some obvious bias towards them and on the other hand, they have to prove that they are patriot. If they flaunt their religion openly they will become suspicious elements instantly.
This is a small book that tries to bring out the hidden prejudices that muslin is facing in the largest democracy of the world. The book is about eleven Muslims. Every story is an eye opener. How one has to make compromises in changing environment, why there are always an eye seeing towards them when they go to a majority dominated are bearing a typical Muslim cap or having bearded may also be curse.
All the stories are written about simple men. They don’t have to do anything with politics. Reading these stories will certainly open the curtain before the eye of communalists. Each subject is unique, ‘they live in different parts of India, speak different languages, eat different foods, do various kinds of work, but are all Muslim.
