supermarket of beliefs

Book Review by: shiror

Original Author: Galia Koplis
Are we bound to adhere to only one faith - atheism, religiosity, science, mysticism ? Today in the era of our post modernism
it is commonly accepted that there is nothing that is MORE important or LESS important. In this book, "The Supermarket of Beliefs", the author, Galia Koplis, suggests checking all the beliefs and the philosophies and what lies between, taking something from one and something from the other. In that way everyone will construct his own personal religion.
However, reading EVERYTHING is too big of a project. That is why in "The Supermarket of Beliefs" each religion is summarized. It includes the following beliefs: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Zoroastroism, Gnosticism, Kabbala, Sufism, Greek philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Science and Secularism. Ancient religions are also included like those of Babylonia, Ancient Egypt, Semitic religions, and ancient Greece.
There are innumerable ways of combining the various parts of these religions like the base of a religion or it's energy into a private one. For example what about a combination of the sexual aspect of Mysticism, the logic of science, the emotions of Islam, and the restraint of Buddhism. Monotheism speaks of one God, and secularity speaks about man. Since each religion has it's own customs and symbols, it is possible for an atheist to attend church or synagogue services and to interpret the customs scientifically without reference to a God. Actually, this type of thinking exists today, but it is not yet legitimized as a personal religion.
What about the future ? The author assumes that in the creative future religious creativity will become the norm. Not only will religions change, but so will the homes, the bodies, and the scenery. The family might become more flexible. According the stream called polyamory there may be multi adult families. Spirituality will also be more flexible. Technology, leaning, and meditation will all aid the development of more flexibility. The method developed in this book will aid the individual in becoming more flexible and enable him to absorb beliefs that were initially outside his scope.
The author believes that every one is a microcosm of the whole - everyone is an entity unto himself that includes all of the universe as in the example of the fractals. Just as the DNA of each cell includes all the information of the whole body, each person includes the total of all the beliefs in the universe.
The book appears in the web site -

Most of it is in Hebrew. There are synopses and certain chapters translated into English. Among them are the introduction and exposition or the subject, Christianity, Kabbala, and the world of the future.
