Northanger Abbey/ by Jane Austen
The story is about the main character, Catherine Morland and how things revolve around her. Miss Morland is like any normal girls in her village except for her interest in doing boy-things instead of girl-things. But she had turned out to be a charming girl as she grows up to the age of seventeen.
Then, the owner of the chief property in her village, Mr. Allen has made his decision to go to the Bath. Mrs. Allen, as she is very fond of Catherine, brought her along to broaden her views of the world. There, Catherine met Henry Tilney. He is easy to talk with and he is handsome too. Catherine thinks highly of him and would like to meet him again. Besides Henry Tilney, Catherine and Mrs. Allen also meet with the Thorpe family. Mrs. Thorpe is Mrs. Allen former classmate and best friend. Catherine made friends with Isabella Thorpe, the eldest daughter in the family. Their topic of discussion is about everything under the sun. Catherine and Isabella become intimate friends and Isabella’s brother, John Thorpe joins the scene with James Morland, Catherine’s eldest brother.
The family of Allen and Thorpe hangs out a lot together in the Bath everyday. Isabella and James gets closer and John Thorpe have started to make his move to Catherine. However, Catherine only has Henry Tilney in her heart. After some time in the Bath, she met with Henry Tilney again and this time, she is introduced to his younger sister, Eleanor. Catherine quickly made acquaintance with Eleanor and they become friends. Henry and Eleanor invite Catherine to go out together but the plan is always interrupted by John and Isabella. They keep persuade our Miss Morland to join their walk instead and succeeded.
The story proceeds with the proposal of marriage by James to Isabella.
Both side of the family is happy with the arrangements. After that, Mr. Allen announced that their visit to the Bath will be coming to an end soon. Feeling sad, Catherine bid farewell to the Tilneys and Eleanor invites her to join them back their home in Northanger Abbey. She is delighted and quickly asks permission from her parents. Her visit is permitted and so, Catherine joins the Tilneys to the Northanger Abbey. Their father, General Tilney treated Catherine with importance and respect. Catherine spends her time walking and talking with Eleanor and Henry.
Then one day, our heroine received a letter from James saying that his engagement with Isabella is off because Isabella is going out with Captain Tilney, Henry’s brother. Things turn worst when a letter arrives to Catherine from Isabella to explain herself but our heroine don’t buy it. In the other hand, Henry needs to leave the house due to some business matters. As if the situation not worst enough, General Tilney suddenly ask Catherine to leave the house the next day without any reasons. Catherine is sad and confused by the sudden cold treatment towards her but she can’t do anything about.
What happens to General Tilney to have him treated Catherine like that? How will Henry Tilney react to this news? Will James be with Isabella again?
