Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Book Review   by:smartjack     Original Author: Jeff Kinney
ª

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a pragmatic fiction narrative written by American author Jeff Kinney. The first book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series was released on April 1, 2007.Originally the book was on Fun Brain. Later it was adapted into a print book and hence Jeff Kinney decided to divide it into a series. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has stayed on the New York Times Best Seller list for children's books for almost 41 weeks as of November 1, 2009.
In the first book the novel begins with an opening introduction to Greg and his middle school life. It starts during his sixth grade year. The book also gives details about the "cheese touch" early on. It is comparable to the game of tag in which the person, who touched the festering cheese at the tarmac which has never been bothered to be taken off, after it had inadvertently fallen out of someone's sandwich, a year earlier, had to get cleared by touching someone else. The first half of the book includes events such as Halloween, learning how to wrestle, and acting in the play of The Wizard of Oz. During trick-or-treating, Greg and Rowley are both trapped by a group of teenagers. But they take refuge at Greg's grandmother's house and tease the teenagers from there by making sounds and faces at them.
On a Christmas day, Greg gets very few presents than he would like. Rowley gets a Big Wheel for Greg. While he is riding the Big Wheel, Greg throws a football at Rowley and Rowley breaks his arm. Later on at school, Rowley gets surrounded by girls who encourage him to get well soon, but Greg feels jealous and this makes him mad. Greg and Rowley join the Safety Patrol whose main responsibility is to safely walk home morning kindergarteners. But However, Greg gets kicked off the Patrol because of chasing the Kindergarteners with a worm and he gets angrier because when Greg gets kicked off, Rowley starts to ignore him. Slowly, they start itinerating apart and Rowley makes friendship with Collin Lee. Greg retaliates by spending his night at Fregley's and this turns into a disaster as Fregley goes hyper by eating too much candy, and Greg gets scared and runs away in the middle of the night. In the end of the school year, Rowley's comic strip gets into the school's newspaper. When Greg tells Rowley to list him as the co-creator because it was his idea and joke punch line, Rowley denies that Greg had anything to do with it and they get ready to fight. But as soon as they fight they are interrupted by the teenagers they taunted on Halloween and they stop fighting. The teenagers showed up to pay them back and they force Rowley to eat the cheese at the blacktop, but Greg gets away by lying to the teenagers saying he is allergic to dairy products. Greg explains to Rowley that he removed the cheese, but the way he words it, it sounds like Greg touched the cheese. Then for the rest of the year, Greg was in privacy from everyone else and he and Rowley became best friends again.
