Book Review   by:esmieang     Original Author: Margaret George

Cleopatra VII was a queen of Egypt. She was the first to learn Egyptian language in the house of Ptolemies. She was an intelligent, hardworking queen who has great compassion for her subjects. She loved truly but she always got hurt because his men Julius Ceasar and Anthony Marcus were bound to their duties in Rome. She married her brother Ptolemy XIII but that was just a ceremony to make him a co-ruler in Egypt  because in her heart, it was all about Julius Ceasar. Ptolemy XIII and their sister Arsinoe revolted against Cleopatra and had civil war along with Arsinoe's tutor, Ganimede. They were defeated in the civil war. Ptolemy XIII died and so the youngest of the brood, Ptolemy XIV married Cleopatra VII to replace Ptolemy XIII as co-regent.
She became a wife of Julius Caesar in an Egyptian rites. They begotten a son Ptolemy Ceasar who was acknowledge by Julius in a party in Rome. He, however, did not make him an heir when he left a will. Instead, he passed on his positions to Octavian, his grand nephew. Their marriage was not honored in Rome because Ceasar refused to divorce his wife Calpurnia. She wept and grieved a lot when Julius Ceasar was stabbed and killed by the Senators in the Forum. She went back to Alexandria with heavy heart. She was pregnant when she left Rome but, eventually, she had miscarriage. As it was not yet enough pain, her brother, Ptolemy IV died due to a lung disease. He buried him in their family mausoleum.
Year after, Cleopatra and Mark Anthony met in Tarsus. they have to decide the future of Egypt and CEsarion. They fell in love. It was learned that Mark Anthony was already attracted to her since she was fourteen years old. It was when her father was restored to kingship after he was dethroned by Cleopatra VII's older sisters, Cleopatra VI and Berenice. They planned to make Cesarion as the real heir of Julius Ceasar and to rule Rome. For a time being, Marc Anthony stayed in Alexandria, where the royal family of Egypt were residing. He left to go to Rome. It took months before Cleopatra learned that Marc Anthony's wife Fulvia died. She felt betrayed when Marc Anthony married Octavian's sister Octavia, instead of her. She was pregnant then, with the twins, Alexander Helios and   Cleopatra Selene, who were named after the sun and the moon. She was deeply hurt when she also learned that coins were minted in Athens in honor of the marriage and Marc Anthony and Octavia were treated as Gods.  However, one day, Cleopatra VII received a message that Marc Anthony was sending for her to Antioch. It was there where Anthony gave him a wedding necklace and proposed a wedding.Cleopatra VII and Marc Anthony were wed in an Egyptian ceremony in the temple of Isis. Anthony's colleagues were there as witness. Octavian, however, did not recognize it. It was taken as an insult by the couple.A year after the marriage, she gave birth to Ptolemy Philadelphios.
Marc Anthony made a will in case he died. He wanted to make Cesareon a real heir of Julius Ceasar as a form of something he could give back to his fallen chief, Julius Ceasar. He also wanted to be buried wherever Cleopatra VII would be buried. It was because he love her so much and he did not want to be separated from her even in death. The will was supposed to be given to the Vestal Virgins for keeping in Rome. However, Octavian seized it and used it to speak slander in the Senate.
Cleopatra lost her battle. Marc Anthony stabbed himself and he was brought to Cleopatra who was, then,  in her own mausoleum. She planned to take suicide her self. She was planning to bargain   her treasures   for the freedom of Egypt and survival of her children. However, she was taken by force to a chamber in the palace where she became feverish and sick. Eventually, she was able to scheme her return to the mausoleum ten days after the death of Anthony. She let herself be bitten by a snake. She was buried beside Anthony in regal ceremony. Her kids with Anthony was taken by Octavian and was raised by Octavia. Cesareon was killed by Octavian while he was escaping to India with a trusted guardian.
