This is the first in The Sookie Stackhouse series. Charlaine Harris is a gifted dark writer.
Sookie seems to be your normal everyday waitress but she has a secret that only a few know about. She can read minds but not many people like getting their brains swished around by a perky blonde waitress from Louisiana.
Vampires came out of the coffin recently to tell the world they do exist. This is the night she meets her first vampire, Bill Compton. She saves his undead life that night from a bunch of redneck drainers. Drainers are the people that drain vampires blood to sell it for a high price.
In return Bill saves Sookie from getting killed by the same drainers that were mad at her for ruining their money. Of course like all forbidden loves, they fall in love. While all this is going on there are murders happening to young girls around the Bon Temps and Sookie trys to figure it out before it claims her life as well.
When the killer kills Sookies cat and then her Grandma it gets personal and scary. This killer doesn't like pretty girls that hook up with vampires. Sookie is next so she has to figure out the murderer before it's too late.
This is a really good and addicting book, once you read it you'll have to read the second one.
