The Fault is in Ours Stars
is a novel written by American author John Green who was born in 1977 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Known as a writer of young adult novels, The
Fault is in Ours Stars is John Green’s fourth solo book. The story is set in
Indianapolis and focuses on sixteen year old Hazel Grace Lancaster who has
terminal thyroid cancer which takes over her lungs. At the age of thirteen Hazel
is withdrawn from school by her parents and as a consequence she becomes
isolated and depressed. Recognising Hazel’s increasingly desperate state her
parents force her to attend a cancer support group for young people. As the
story unfolds Hazel tells of her life, emotional journey and relationship with
her parents, friends and members of the support group, in particular her boyfriend
Augustus. Augustus is a seventeen year old whose cancer is in remission however
he is an amputee as a consequence of his illness. He is a young man who refuses
to allow his cancer to overtake his life and he helps Hazel to live rather than
let her cancer consume her.
Although the subject matter of this book is
rather depressing the book itself is not and John Green enables the reader to
look beyond the cancer and see a normal young girl who has needs and interests,
the same as any other. This is not a book about how a young girl fights this
dreadful disease it is about teenagers and their relationships. Hazel’s relationship
with Augustus is particularly important and their interactions bring humour and
wit to what could be a very depressing story.
