"One Night @ the Call Center" is the second Novel in a row by Chetan Bhagat, a
new breed Indian Writer in English language. (Chetan's first book "Five Point Someone" first published in 2004 was also a run away success). 70,000 copies of this book were sold in the first 3 days of its releasing. It continues to top the best sellers list till date. That then is a staggering figure for an unknown new author.
The
story revolves around 6
characters working in an Indian Call Center as narrated by the hero Shyam. Others characters are Priyanka, Varun, Esha, Radhika and Military Uncle. The author peeps in to the lives of these characters and tries to portray their dreams, aspirations, sorrows and struggles. It gives a deep insight in to the working of Call centers in India.
Chetan has done fairly well in portraying the youngest
urban generation of India. Characterization of Varun and Priyanka is particularly of interest; they shaped well and fit into 21st century urban youth. He maintains an easy writing
style and his language is simple. However, I find the ending of the story unrealistic and perhaps cinematic though he has started the novel in great style and form.
