Uncle Fred is at his
best. This novel amuses you from start to finish. The presence of mind and the
engaging wit of this lovable
Uncle make us forget our pestering worries. The
reader’s morale is uplifted to soaring heights by the pep talk he gives his
nephew and the ease with which he traverse through the intimidating chain of events.
The setting is the
ever famous Blandings castle, where our beloved
Lord Emsworth is spending his
time with Empress of Blandings, the silver medalist in Fat pig category at Shropshire. Even though he is the lord, his sister Lady
Constance rules the roost. Duke of Dunstable, a capital chap with an urge to
throw eggs at gardener is a guest at the castle. The plot thickens with the
arrival of uncle Fred, his nephew Pongo, and a girl by name Polly, under the
disguise as the brain specialist Sir Roderick Glossop , his
secretary and his
daughter. Evidently they are on a
mission….
Pongo the nephew of our hero is constantly under financial
need, a result of answering to his gambling urges. Polly’s lover is a
poet with
knack for breaking others neck. The girl wants to raise
fund for him to start
an onion soup bar. For this she has to play up on the Duke of Dunstable to ease
out the fund. Add to this Horace Davenport, the nephew of the Duke, a potty
detective, the efficient secretary Mr. Baxter, the poet himself in person and
you are ready for the action.
Uncle Fred shows a penchant for intricate situations and is
in his best when handling seemingly impossible situations. The impersonation as
the Brain specialist falls through, but our Uncle continues the mission to a
successful finish.
