2. What types of struggles do the characters deal with? Are they responsible for their own fates or is life just unfair for them?
3. What is the role of women? How are gender roles complicated by poverty and desperation?
4. Are
advances in society always welcomed? As per the novel, why are advances beneficial? Why not?
5. What happens when cultures collide? Who are the true victims?
