The first
meaning of "
outpost" is a military base. It is a
distant settlment of
progress. The second meaning, which we are looking for, is that
people(Europeeans) came from a distant land to civilize others(Africans). This story is about
exploitation. The exploitation of the African people and resources. Kayerts and Carlier are the most important characters in the novel. They came from the other land(Europe) with prejudices and stereotypes. They did not give chance to themselves to know the others.so we have a kind of oppositions between two completely different worlds, for example:Europeans:
civilized Africans: wildEuropeans: civilized Europeans:lightAfricans:darknessEuropeans:religionAfricans: superstitionEuropeans:order Africans:chaosEuropeans:artAfricans:folkloreEuropeans:habitual and safeAfricans:unusual and dangerous
