I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I think I have read every book that Mary Higgins Clark has ever written.
She is a mystery writer. "Queen of Suspense" they call her. This book was about the kidnapping of three-year old twin
girls
; Kathy and Kelly Frawley who live in Ridgefield, Connecticut. To celebrate their third birthday, the twins have an afternoon birthday party. On the evening of their birthday party, their parents attend a black-tie affair in New York City. When they return home, they find the police in their house. Their twins have been kidnapped and the babysitter was knocked unconscience. There is a ransom note demanding eight million dollars left in their room. The father, Steve Frawley works for a global investment
company
. His company agrees to pay the ransom. The kidnapper who identifies himself as "The Pied Piper" makes his terms known -- on delivery of the ransom, a call will come revealing the girls'' whereabouts. The call comes, but only one of the twins, Kelly is in the car parked behind a deserted restaurant. The driver is dead from a gunshot wound and has left a suicide note, saying he had inadvertently killed Kathy, the other twin and had dumped her body in the ocean. At the private memorial Mass for Kathy, Kelly tugs her mother''s arm and says: "Mommy, Kathy is very scared of that lady. She wants to come home right now". More unexplainable occurrences follow indicating that Kelly is in touch with Kathy. At first, no one except the mother believes that the twins are communicating and that Kathy is still alive. As Kelly''s warnings become increasingly specific and alarming, however, FBI agents aset out on a search for Kathy. "The Pied Piper turns out to be a member of the board of directors in the company where the twin''s father works. Two of the accomplices were cell mates at Attica State Prison. One of them was "The Pied Piper''s driver. The woman who minds the twins after they are kidnapped is a nutcase who has spent time in a psychiatric hospital. She is the one who decides to keep one of the twins for herself because she always wanted a child. She ends up not being able to care for Kathy when she gets sick and says that Kathy is just too mjch trouble and she need to get rid of her.
