The book, “In Her Shoes” talks about the relationship of two sisters that was tested by time and of faith. It is a modern
day novel that can happen to anyone or to anybody with the same gender sibling relationships. The main characters in the novel, were the Feller sisters, Rose and Maggie. Both sisters were exactly opposite in traits and outlooks in life. Rose is a serious lawyer with thick eyeglasses while Maggie is a happy go lucky girl with no permanent job and focuses more on her selfish acts. Their mother died early when they were still kids and their father remarried again. Their stepmother treated them so harshly that made the two sisters cling to each other. They share the same shoes, the same boyfriends and the same apartment. What is funny about this novel is that both Maggie and Rose have the same size of shoes. They lived together at Rose’s apartment comfortably away from their harsh stepmom. One day, due to the sisters’
differences, a good looking man dropped by their apartment. He was looking for Rose but only Maggie was there. Maggie became a traitor by seducing the good looking guy and invited him for sex. When Rose came, she saw the whole event. She pushed away Maggie and telling her to go away and never come back again. Maggie flew away towards her
grandmother where she used the money she found at her father’s room that were inserted inside the greeting cards. Her grandmother welcomed her but she has a condition that she must earn her own money penny by penny by working in a nursing home. There she met an old man, a retired professor that would like to hear someone reads for him. At first Maggie hesitated to read for him, but then after a while, she found herself reading an article for the old man, entitled “One Art”, a poetry by Elizabeth Bishop. The old man asked him again what was it all about, then Maggie answered him, “It was all about losses, like the girl in the poetry, it doesn’t really matter to her that she lost from keys to continents. Then the old man called him…”Smart Girl”.. Maggie learned a lot from the nursing home until the death of the old man. With her surprise one day, her sister Rose came confessing that she just broke up with her boyfriend. Maggie became successful in reuniting Rose and his boyfriend after their broke up and eventually ended into a beautiful wedding. Their grandmother also reunited with their father and with the two loving sisters that ended the novel happily and with fulfillment. This is a very inspiring novel telling all the readers to make the most of their time to love and care with each of their members in the family whether they were called either the black sheep or the angel of the family. Each person is unique. We all have our own differences from weakness to achievements. But only love can make us all united and erasing all differences with each one of us.
