MEIN AIDS HUN (I AM AIDS)
Sex with more than one partner, is known to be one of the causes for AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which is now well known as a killer
disease. In this book, the author has tried to bring medical
science to lime light with his pen, for the benefit and welfare of the people of the world. Intelligent people take actions on the basis of past experience. The author has divided the book in three parts. The first part gives detailed
information about AIDS, while the second part gives details of the efforts of the patients for their
cure, and the third part is an autobiography of a patient of AIDS. The hero of the novel is Ravi, who finds pleasures of
life in sex only, and he tries to establish physical relationship with every woman, he comes in contact with, in his life. With his such activities, during one of such moments he thinks that, he is not fit to be called a
human being, but an animal, with no control on his weakness and habit for sex. He thinks that his body may be of that of a human being, but his soul is that of an animal, may be that of a dog. He wants to become a normal human being. But he becomes a patient of AIDS. He starts hating himself. Several social organizations are creating publicity for AIDS, through various means like lectures, books, seminars, TV programmes etc. Ravi, the hero of this novel, has been identified as an AIDS patient. The Doctors initiate efforts to cure him of this disease. One of the Doctors, motivates Ravi to write his autobiography. Ravi starts writing it, but he dies before completing it. In this novel, Ravi is taken as a representative, of the youth of the next generation. In the name of freedom, many of the youth are engaged in sexual activities, taking them as enjoyment, and are endangering their own health. As per the author, what sort of freedom, friendship and enjoyment it is, when it is leading to the deadly AIDS disease. This novel attempts to draw their attention, to this danger. The author is a Hindi writer from New Delhi. He has to his credit, many publications and awards. The first part has 22 Chapters, and in some of these Chapters, a demon delivers speeches from a hill top, about his past sexual experiences, and his AIDS disease. Its three Chapters discuss about various tests like Elisa test, and the prospects of the various present methods of its treatment, in various systems of medicine. Finally it is said that, Prevention is better than cure. The author provides names in India, of AIDS reference centres, AIDS testing centres and details of literature available about it. Part two in its five Chapters, discusses as to how Ravi contracted AIDS initially, his symptoms, start of treatment and Doctor’s advice to Ravi to write his autography, details of which, will be helpful in treating him. Part three in its 49 Chapters, gives some details of Ravi’s autobiography, for each of the 39 days of his efforts for writing. He tries to recollect various important events in serial order, about his encounters and relations with several women, and provides graphic details of his escapades with them and his treatment in the hospital etc. His death is reported in one of the Chapters. Being an AIDS patient, his cremation is not allowed in the general cremation ground, and finally he is taken for electric cremation. The various newspapers express their shock over his untimely death, and a condolence meeting is organized to express sorrow. One married woman also speaks at this meeting, and expresses her
love for Ravi, and talks philosophically, over various aspects of man and woman relationship. Two Chapters describe about a news item, about the cure for AIDS, and about the soul. Ravi is honoured posthumously in a big rally, where a copy of the book of his poems, is given to his wife Vidyotama, where she announces her marriage to her childhood lover, and also her resolve to fight the AIDS menace. A National literary seminar is also organized. Later on, Ravi’s wife Vidyotama delivers a child, who is also named Ravi. As he grows up, he also develops interest in poetry. Vidyotama along with her son, aged four years, goes to a temple, where the priest tells the child, sixteen points to follow in the life, and makes him take an oath for this purpose. The last Chapter describes the turn of events, when the author completes this present novel. It is a different type of novel, with a different type of objective. It aims at welfare of the people, by bringing to their notice, the menace of AIDS disease. It cautions them, by telling them about the seriousness and severity of this disease. The novel (written in Hindi language) serves well, its purpose of creating awareness about AIDS. It is worth reading by all adults, who are literate in Hindi.
