Such conspirators were in the persons of Baron Danglars, Fernand Mondego, Monsieur de Villefort, along with Caderousse. These four were determined to jeopardize Dantes'' life by accusing him of being a bonapartist and imprisoning him in the dreaded Chateau d''If. Once Dantes'' is imprisoned he loses all hope. Until he hears a faint sound behind the walls of the gloomy prison. Here he meets Abbe Faria who greatly helps him in his escape and introduces to him the treasure hidden in the Isle of Monte Cristo. After his escape, Dantes then discovers and retrieves the treasure at Monte Cristo and here he begins his vendetta against the people who ultimately killed his innnocence and drowned him in despair. revenge for Villefort. In a court trial the Count ingeniously ruins Villefort''s career, which is Villefort''s most cherished posession, by having Villefort''s own illegitimate son reveal to the whole court room about Villefort''s attempt to kill his illegitimate son and Villefort''s affair with danglar''s wife. With this revelation, Villefort loses everything and goes mad. Then follows Mondego, who stole mercedes from Edmond after his imprisonment. The Count reveals to the council Mondego''s murder of Ali Pasha in a battle. The Count has been avenged when Mondego''s political standing is ripped to shreds. Mondego shortly kills himself. The Count''s last target is Danglars. He finishes his plan for vengeance by ingeniously forcing Danglars to lose all his money. Since Danglars has his love set only to money, he loses everything.
