Sumithra Rahubadda is a famous novelist in Sri Lanka. So many novels of her has been taken as Sinhalese tele dramas and those are very popular in Sri Lanka. Bumuthurun u is one of them. Dool Dula is her latest
novel and it is based on lives of youths in Sri Lanka today.
The English meaning of the novel is "Tender Daughters". The daughter and the son of the novel face so many problems which are psychological problems faced by the Sri Lankan
youth today due to economical and cultural stagnation prevaling in the country.
The education system in the country paved the way for the parents to force their
children to gain higher position in the
society without
real values in human being. When there is pressure which is so powerful to control, the innocent youths struggle to jump over the norm of the society and as a result astray in the society.
The main characters in the book, a girl and the boy, are children belong in one
family. The father of the family is a principle in a government school and always with a cane to discipline his children. The mother is very obedient to the husband no matter whatever the decision he takes.
Since their early age the children have been struggling to gain their identities and independence from their father and this idea is culminated by leaving from parent's home and staying in the city.
This event led to so many catastrophics in their lives and their father and mother died very soon as they were extremely sad over their action.
At the end, the brother was taken by the unknown forces and killed while the sister was left alone in the world.
This
story entangled with so many events that tell the reader the contemporary situation in Sri Lanka as well as the social problems of the youths in it.
But the story has so many weaknesses. Sometimes the reader may feel that the authour has no real purpose behind her story. The events are being so linked that a reader has difficulties of believing the situation.
A novel which has ingredients to be a good novel has become a ordinary novel without real values which are so needed to the contemporary society in Sri Lanka.
