Mary Celeste--The True Story

Book Review by: Sandy Knight

Original Author: Artur Barros
This abstract was translated from MARY CELESTE - A VERDADEIRA HISTÓRIA
By the end of 1872 , a three masts sailboat  called " Mary Celeste", commanded by its own owner (Capitain Briggs)
left the New York harbour heading Italy. Allong with him also travelled his wife and his two years old baby daughter. Both of them suffering from the most common disease at the time: Tuberculosis. The couple also had a boy who wasn''t ill,so to keep him safe the boy was left with his grandparents. Three weeks later, the crew of another ship, the "Dei Gratia" whose commander had had dinner with Capitain Briggs a couple of days before the  departing, found "Mary Celeste" drifting really close to Azores. Approaching the sailboat the "Dei Gratia" crew sees that everything was in order. No signs of being hit by a storm...No signs of violence what so ever...In fact, they soon find out the there''s nobody on bord... Later on, Capitain Morehouse himself (the "Dei Gratia"commander) will turn in the sailboat to the Gilbraltar Coast Guard, telling them everything that was said before, and collecting the reward for the the ransom of the sailboat as well as its cargo: about 1600 of denaturated alcohol barrels. All this are thrutful facts. Nothing more is officially known about what happened to Capitain Briggs, to his wife, to his daughter and to the crew that travelled along with him. Much has been said about what may have happened a bord"Mary Celeste", once everybody has misteriously disappeared without leaving a trace, however  noboby was able to unvail the mistery that involves one of the most famous disappearences in the history of mankind. In this master piece Artur Barros, based in the revelations of a strange character that out of the blue reaches the narrator, reconstitutes the sailboat trip just as well as Capitain Briggs lifetime before the events showing us what really happened and taking us beyond the moment of Capitain Briggs and his crew disappearence. I''t''s a wonderful adventure full of intrigue, mistery, love and betrayal that begins before the departure from New York and it only ends in a future and in a world truly amazing.
