Main Characters Caliban "Cal" Leandros Caliban is the result of his mother mating with an otherworldly creature, a Grendel (Auphe). Although Cal is half-monster, he is also half-human and therefore looks like every other inhabitant of Manhattan. Cal inherited his Greek-Romani mother''s raven hair, but has the pale skin of his father. Realistically, Cal should be 17-years-old, but wherever he went when he was kidnapped aged him two years, so he''s now 19. He used to work at a local bar, but has since switched to working as a body guard with Niko.
Niko Leandros Niko is Cal''s older half-
brother and only sibling. He is described as being handsome, with the nose of a Roman soldier. Because of this he is often referred to by Cal as Cyrano. As their mother was neglectful and really didn''t pay much attention to them, Niko took to looking out for his younger brother at a young age. Considered the "practical" one of the pair, Niko is calm, enjoys meditating and natural foods. Until recently, he was known for his long, blonde hair that was usually worn in a braid, but he chopped it off (in traditional Romani mourning style) when he believed he had lost Cal. He is now sporting a goatee to make up for that. Although Niko has no relation to the Auphe, he is as tough as nails and practices many types of martial arts. Niko also works as a body guard with Cal.
Rob Fellows Rob Fellows, more commonly known as Robin Goodfellow, is one of the last known Pucks <<1>> in existence. He poses as a car salesman and due to his sly, sneaky nature, fits in very naturally. Goodfellow is described as good-looking with a constant look of mischief on his face. Although seemingly perverted and selfish, he eventually proves to be useful to the
brothers and becomes a good friend.
Plot summary Caliban Leandros (Cal, for short) and his older half-brother Niko live a life on the run. Cal and Niko lost their mother at the hands of the nightmarish creatures that the brothers refer to as Grendels. During that same encounter, the Grendels kidnapped Cal into their otherworldly dimension and left Niko alone to wait and mourn the loss of his only two family members. However, Niko waited vigilantly at the site of Cal''s capture and a few days later, Cal returned, aged two years and with no memory of what he had been through. Because of this, it is unknown what the Grendels want with Cal; all that is apparent is that Cal''s father, the monster responsible for Cal''s existence, is the head Auphe who''s behind the pursuit.
Eventually, Cal and Niko settle in Manhattan, New York, where, although many supernatural creatures dwell within, Cal and Niko find themselves relatively safe in the urban area. Everything is calm and normal until Niko spots a Grendel in Central Park, an event that puts the brothers'' lives in danger once again.
The brothers soon seek out the help of every creature in the city, including a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a beautiful vampire in the Upper East Side, and a young red-haired psychic, to whom Cal pays extra close attention. Cal and Niko also come across Robin Goodfellow, a very mischievous puck disguised as a car salesman who decides to help the two on their mission to battle the Auphe. The trio appears to have things under control gets possessed by a male banshee and begins to terrorize Manhattan. It is now up to Niko and Goodfellow to save Cal before it''s too late.
Although a debut novel, it is worth reading
