The ubiquitous Indo-English writer R.K.Narayan's
Man Eater of Malgudi is a
novel that has gotten accolades from
people from all walks of life throughout the world. The core essence of this novel is based on the adage that
the deeds of a man lead him to his destination, and his usage of the Hindu myth Bhasmasura's self destruction to relate to Vasu's down fall is well praised piece in the novel. Though, this novel is written long back, the essence of the novel is a universally well known fact, regardless of the period, place, sect and etc. The Indianness in every moment of the novel and the
lifestyle of those days in Malgudi have been vividly
depicted, making you feel as if you were one of the people of the typical fictious south Indian
town.
Coming to the theme of the novel, Malgudi is the town, where the people are living very happily, helping each other. The lifestyle in the town shows us the beauty of the Indian culture, honesty and the innocence of the people of that time. A highly educated and intellectual fellow by name Vasu enters the town and disturbs the serenity in the town. With his aggressive attitude, he makes the lives of the local people being on the tenterhooks. R.k.Narayan has cleaverly related the Bhasmasura myth to the life of Vasu and interestingly depicted how he himself paves the path to his end. This novel gives the refreshing feeling and there are some witty quotations by Vasu make laugh very much.
