Former Masters

Book Review by: Louidger

Original Author: Thomas Bernhard
This abstract was translated from Maîtres anciens
I wish in my hands a pure masterwork, a jewel of world literature. Thomas Bernhard is the great forgotten
in our modern literature. And the writer has done nothing to improve his case: he lived recluse in Upper Austria before dying in the year 1989 to the age fifty-eight years. His novel Former Masters appeared four years before his death. For thirty-six years, Reger (music critic at the Times of London), he used to sit every two days on the bench of the hall Bordone, at Former Art Museum in Vienna. It carries out his thoughts  to Man with the white beard of Tintoretto. Spirit rigorous magnet above all punctuality, Reger discusses with Irrsigler, the keeper of the museum. The latter, despite being cleared and discreet, which will in the presence of those who would become his wife. Master former is subtitled COMEDY, it s''agit of 'one very subtle humor that only true connoisseurs will be able to'apprécier because this reading may s''avérer difficult: it consists of a single paragraph Two-hundred fifty-two pages. Reger was big on heart against his homeland: he accuses his corrupt political system, uncleanliness of its public toilets, neglect of municipal services and medical negligence serious consequence puisqu''elle is responsible, according to Reger, the deaths his wife. Still lucid, Reger is merciless toward these great composers' likes and dislikes at the same time: Bach, 'defined as a big stinking; Beethoven, whom he blamed for being an artist d'État , a character perfectly and pushing to the music of Mozart: kitsch and full of small jupon and small panties. Orchestras and their leaders (Toscanini and Furtwängler) did a little better: ridiculous and kitsch. By contrast writers find beads: a writer who does nothing is not really a writer . This can help in several. One likes, one dislikes it, depending. All agree dependely to recognize a writer Thomas Bernhard forefront, a writer in inimitable style and so brilliant. His work deserves to be decrypted and this book will introduce you among others
