Charles Dickens is one of the remarkable novelists of his age i.e. early Victorian period. He is well known for presenting the prevalent social
conditions of the period in a
realistic way. In all of his
novels we can notice the burning problems, which become hazardous to the society. The vivid description of the social conditions in his novels makes the readers more engaging.
One of his popular novels A Tale of Two Cities will present you the realistic social conditions that are prevailed in England and France during the French Revolution. The novel lets you walk through the cruel deeds of the kings and their
dynasty and how they impacted the society and how the
common people in France have enraged and revolted against the dictators of the country.
In this
novel a few important characters such as Dr Mannette, his daughter, Charles and Sidney Cartan and a few other minor characters run the story interestingly. Dr Mannette is the pivotal character and he is the most adorned person of the common people in France. His 18 years imprisonment makes the common men infuriated and rebelled against the tyranny. Charles the offshoot of the king dynasty loves Mannette’s daughter and marries her and soon after the marriage he lands in soup of French Revolution. As a result of the uninterrupted suppression of the king dynasty, the common men started doing away with the people belong to the dynasty and gets boundless joy in doing so.
The character, which is named as the heart of the novel is Sydney Carton. As he resembles Charles, he decides to save the life of Charles. Because Carton once loved Mannette’s daughter, now thinking of her happiness with her husband Charles and so sacrifices himself on the altar of friendship.
