God of
small things by Arundhati Roy is a somewhat a long story of revolts and rebellion in the sense of making a mountain out of molehills. It is a sad story of Ammu-the protagonist, her different facet twin kids-Astha and Rahel, who were born in an upper class, prosperous Christian family of Kerala village called Ayenmen. They''''re doomed to
face the bad
luck because they ''''ve broken the rules of their own family as well as community !The rules which tells us with whom one should love and how much !They''''re facing the bad luck because they''''d tried to cross the limitation, trespassing into a prohibited area of morality.Where uncles kept changing into father and mother often
played as beloved ! But perhaps these are incomplete introduction of the story which has encroached the prohibited areas. The introduction become complete when divorce e Ammu chose to share her love with no other than the Belutha -a low cast man, considered as untouchables ! Belutha who till recently was an out class and below the level, suddenly emerged as an equal and contemporary to that high upper class land lord family as he began to love love their daughter !The trouble shooter of the Paradise pickles and Ayenmen house unimaginable and unacceptable impudent and burst of Ammu''''s frustration brings out and show the real face of that high class family. The woman-Ammu who was always seemed ever ready to welcome her guest with her sweet cakes and songs and who always put on well starched and ironed Sari, had really never shown her such ugly face before ! They wonder how this well-cultured and elegant looking woman learned all those indecent, abusive words ! When her aunt y-Baby Kochamma got to know about that dangerous and dirty love affairs of Ammu she too wondered,"How she could be able to bear those smells...!"This is the same Baby aunte who once foolishly loved a Bishop in her imagination and ended almost as nun ! The same Baby aunt who once had broken all the rules of this house herself, played a crucial role in prosecution against Ammu''''s trespass !The writer of this novel has depicted the lives and times of a Kerala Christan family very deeply and very intelligently. This story is also about a contradictory living and staying in two different world simultaneously and failing to make either of them as their own ! The frustration of one Pappachi who despite being Oxford educated and taught at Madras college and played some luck in
communist politics before migrating to Canada at last ! , the long history of madness of Ayenmen family members are some of the expression of that contradictions .To depict these contradictions the writer had created an effective fiction in form of a history house ! The seemingly lonely house across the river-Kari, was the house of one Englishman of local version and who would speak Malyalam language and used to were mundu and when his lover boy was taken away by his family he shot himself dead !This is not accidental or co-incident that some facts have been taken out from this fiction.Specially the name resemblance of a well known communist leader of Kerala state and other comments made upon him.But ignoring the communist movement as the back drops in the context of this novel wouldn''''t have been completed and justified in anyway !
