The story of this novel has been woven around two protagonist
character-Mr. and Mrs Narayan who happen
to be a renowned and prominent classical
singing couple, representing Kiran
Gharana-a particular
house style of singing. Both have been awarded on several occasions
and have created so much wealth with their performance and teaching.
But they’re very sad. They had lost their only son-Ranjan in a car accident,
five years ago. Losing a young and promising son at that stage of life is quite
difficult to accept. Had Ranjan was alive they’d have no problem at all, as he
was very talented and promising singer and could have taken charge of their
Gharana’s name and pride to further height. But the fate had another script
written for them. They lost all their
dreams and hopes and this sadness was
eating them from within. And whenever they’re left alone they used to remember
Ranjan and kept weeping behind the door. Muttu, who was and
editor of an
English daily was also a big fan and close friend of Narayan family, knew that.
But he believed leading life in positive manner. He knew lose couldn’t be
compensated but if they could compromise on something new it’d be better. Mr.
Muttu advised them to adopt a son. Narayan family agreed on that but they
insisted that the son should be at the same as of their first son and must have
good singing
voice. So they can teach him properly. After long search Mr.Muttu
found one gem-Rajan.
Rajan has good voice but he only love singing Bollywood numbers.Mr. And
Mrs.Narayan was happy to find one boy who’s the Potentiality to replace the
dead and gone. They took their adopted son to a far off destination and began
the training. Rajan was really showing keen interest to learn Aalap and Taans
from two top Gurus of classical singing. On the other hand, Mr.&Mrs.
Narayan taught everything they know, leaving no stone unturned to teach him
each and every bit of singing style of Kiran Gharana-which would soon to be
handed over to Rajan as he was the lone inheritor of that house.
But despite all these glamour Rajan had other passion in his mind. That
was to become a
software engineer and owing a software company! It’s not that
Mr.&Mrs Narayan were not aware about Rajan’s dream and ambition but instead
of council ling him any way they used to wonder and ridicule him! Rajan didn’t
like that and had often a heated argument with his parents over this topic. But
having seen their love and regards, he couldn’t able to express so.
Just three day was to go.Mr.Narayan has got every arrangement fixed
before hand. Everything was well planed. There’s to be solo performance of
Rajan and introduction to the world media and press conference. But one night
before the departure while they were taking dinner Mrs.Narayan was telling
Rajan about importance of that show. Rajan got angry at once and yet another
heated argument ensued between them. After that Rajan hurriedly got off from
house, took out car and at the highway deliberately dashed with a roadside tree,
out of frustration! The
Police found Rajan dead body at the accident site and
informed Narayan family about that incident. Mr.&Mrs.Narayan couldn’t
believe and denied, at first but when they arrived at the police station they
turned into stone with shock! And when they began to weep together it sounded
like a duet Aalap.All T.V. news channels were covering this rare and amazing
event of weeping of Narayans very silently .After all they‘re getting free
footages of that performance. It doesn’t matter anyway, whether they were
singing or weeping, as it sounded alike!
