Making of a Man

Book Review by: Amiabi

Original Author: Shajan
What makes our lives so predictable is a real question that has to be answered at some point of time for every one of us!
You are no more happy with yourself! You think you can do much more… Again… yet another question… Who is stopping you? And for what…”
Siva looked deep in to Swamiji’s eyes.
“My name is Siva. I know Nanda Gopal Varma…and I want to meet him Swamiji.”
Swamiji nodded his head. He turned his register to look for Nanda Gopal Varma.
“1743. Nanda Gopal Varma, New Delhi. “
“Yes Swamiji…”
“Are you a relative?”
“Much more than that…”
Swamiji was not happy with that reply. But then; he did not insist.
Siva could feel the pride of silence. The soothing smell of sandal wood paste… burning of cotton in gingili oil…
Swamiji accompanied Siva to Nanda Gopal Varma.
“Nandu…”
It is exactly thirteen years and twenty three days!  Don’t ask for the calculations… does it matter any more? But, is this the man you were always admiring…Siva could not hide his confusion.
“Yes… he is your own Nandu… Are you going to be here for some time?” Swamiji was not expecting an answer. He left them alone.
“Nandu…”
“I am alright…!”
What does it mean?
Perhaps nothing. Nandu has changed a lot….
It was the last week of July of that year.  Nandu had passed his graduation with first class. Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He wanted to continue his studies for post graduation… It was his dream to join Jawaharlal Nehru University at New Delhi; popularly known as JNU. The only place he thought he can share his vision.
Nandu got his train ticket booked in Mangala Express to New Delhi. His students at Prathibha Tutorial College gave him a warm send off. Some were happy and some were sad… “Nandu Sir was and will be an inspiration for all of us!”
That day, Thrissur Railway Station was crowded with Nandu’s relatives and friends. All came to see off him and wish him good luck. Nandu waved his hands as the train was moving… “Sure, he will bring name and fame to our village…”
It was true.
“Nandu… What happened to you then?”
