Another
punk book from another Chicago author. Brian takes us on a personal
journey with the
drummer of a brief and exciting
band known as 'The
Enchanters'. Answering a posting for a
new drummer, the narrator
finds himself in the midst of a wild, creative new band. They break
all the rules and challenge all the norms. The band flies out of
control into outer space. The
play house parties and inspire others
to form similar projects.
The
entire town, Sprawlburg Springs, is a place we all know - any burb.
The adults
fear change and excitement, so they fear The Enchanters.
Many of the kids, on the other hand, are ready for this new movement.
The band is either loved or hated. Eventually, along their plan to
move to Brooklyn things go crazy. All but the lead singer lose their
jobs, there are no places to play without being arrested, and there
is little to look forward to because they can't afford to move yet.
They
have one last chance - to play at a club, run by a man they hate.
There is hope! But the first concert turns into a riot and the band
breaks up. All the members are conquered by the life they are trying
to escape, except maybe the drummer. But he's writing a faded memory
of good times that ended badly - the only way they could, with their
plane tail spinning out of control and landing in the ocean.
