The mother of prisoner number: 1084, is written by an eminent and very
popular Bangla writer and social activist Mahashweta Devi.
The story of this novel is based on the background of violent Naxal Movement
of 70s.This novel has a story about a young man-Varti who was born in a middle
class family and grows as an aggressive, angry and revolutionary young man.
During his growing up years he had had to witness and realized such factors of
life and time which played crucial roles to change him, gradually into and
aggressive and revolutionary person though, secretly. During his growing up
ages Verti watched how his Mother is being treated badly and subjected several
tortures by his elite, bourgeois Father. Although, there were other members in
the family but he only liked his Mother and nobody else. For Verti other
members his family seemed to have lost in their way and corrupt.
Apart from his home Verti see nothing but injustice, cowardice and
opportunism every where in the society. Later in years Verti joined Naxal
Movement along with his like minded friends. Meanwhile during these fighting
and struggling period he met with a girl in his organization and fell in her
love. On the other hand, Verti’s Mother-the protagonist character of this novel
didn’t aware anything about Verti’s secret activities and involvement in the
ongoing Naxal movement. This was illegal and considered as the crime against
government. She was, in fact, just like any other mother of Indian middle class
family whose roles are limited only to the four walls of home and doesn’t like
to interfere into outside affairs and love to care all needs of family.
At the middle of one anxious night, a telephone call came from local
police station and ordered Mother to visit police station and identify a dead
prisoner whose batch number was 1084.When Mother visited that police station to
identify that body she was shocked to see that the body which she was supposed
to identify was none other than of his young son -Verti! Totally shocked Mother
could not understand how and why his son was killed in such a manner. Then
comes that girl into the scene, introducing herself as the beloved of Verti and
tells Mother in detail how Verti become so aggressive and revolutionary and why
he had decided to join Naxal movement.
Verti cause turned her Mother’s attitude and mind set after that .She
gradually able to transform herself from meek spectator and victim of brutality
to an aggressive woman. Her son had taught her how to fight for her right at
home and outside. She begins to fight back and joined a human right group to
help others in these matters.
