The Kite Runner is a story of two young boys and how the same event shapes their lives in completely different, yet linked, ways.  It's a story of life, of shame, friendship, loyalty, regret and forgiveness.  The novel is set in Afghanistan during the country's most difficult times.  Hosseini elequantly captures the true essence of life in the middle east.  It is a story about a young boy, Hassan, who is trying hard to remain best friends with his employers son.  Hassan comes from a poor family, but he and his employers son, Amir, become really good friends.  One day, during the annual kite tournament, something really bad happens to Hassan while Amir looks on from behind a wall.  Amir does nothing to stop the incident and this marks a change in their friendship.  Amir needs to deal with his guilt, which he will carry for a very long time.  Hassan needs to deal with the scars that are left over from the incident.  They grow apart, and Amir grows up and moves to the US.  He returns to Afghanistan to save a little boy, and in doing so, saves his soul from dipping deaper into a black pit of dispair.  It is a brilliant novel.
