The
novel, THE NANNY DIARIES, by
Emma McLaughlin and
Nicola Kraus is also a 2007 comedy film written and directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini and produced by Richard N. Gladstein with its cast Scarlett Johansson, Alicia Keys, Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney.
THE NANNY DIARIES is an awesome book that helps you get a glimpse inside the Park Avenue apartments, its street and its class of people and the experience that the caretakers have to go through with the parents of the children they have to take care of. This book is charismatic and Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus is exceptional in the way they describe the lives of these uppity and egocentric parents who do not understand that their children are more important than their high class empty lives filled with nothing but material things and superficial relationships. This book shows the relationship between the parents and the nannies and exposing the lives of the nannies and how they juggled their lives for their employers and the relationships the nannies might be hindered from.
In THE NANNY DIARIES, the novel begins in the fall semester of the school year where it proceeds to Annie’s graduation and her vacation with the Xes’ trip to Nantucket in June. Annie is a senior at New York University majoring in child development with the hope of a career in education. She owns an apartment until she moves out due to some disagreement with her roommate. Annie gets the job as a nanny simply because she is Caucasian and can speak French fluently and have experience as a Caretaker. This looks like the perfect job for Annie living in the Park Avenue apartments with these extremely rich families who live in them.
Refusing to call Annie by her first name, Mrs. X instead gives every demand with the name Nanny. Nanny duties go beyond her regular duties of taking care of Grayer to serving Mrs. X's every demand by making dinner and party reservations, going shopping for the Xes' parties and any other surprises Mrs. X likes to throw at her.
Mrs. X’s background is huge in prestige and caliber compared to most families by which Mrs. X’s family lives on the prestigious Park Avenue in city of Manhattan and is born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She is very common with designer labels, luxury items, and popular bars and speaks French well and graduated from Chapin which is a distinguished Manhattan girls' school.
In the book when the Xes’s marriage begins to fall to pieces mainly because Mr. X has a secret girlfriend who is known as Ms. Chicago and one day comes to sleep in the Xes’ apartment while the family was on vacation not knowing that the Nanny was there. Now, Nanny feels obligated to cover that last episode which makes her more involved in the lives of the Xes more than she anticipated.
