The story starts when a young woman rents a little boat that takes her to a far away place. The old man who takes her there,
leaves her in a lonely place. As he starts his journey back, he realizes that the woman has jumped from a high cliff. He rescues her, and takes her to Lethe House, a clinic for demented people whose families abandom them there almost to their own fate. Dr. Carrick is in charge of this clinic; in fact, this is his clinic. He himself has a "mental" problem. He was an outstanding doctor until he was shot on the head; that shot changed his life dramatically. After being shot, he cannot continue practicing because the slightest physical contact with his patients makes him suffer terrible headaches and also read people´s minds. People see him as an abnormal being.
At Lethe House, the wounded young woman almost dies, but Dr. Carrick saves her life. Selena, the name given to her by Ian Carrick, doesn´t seem to have a past, for when he touches her, he doesn´t have any of his usual visions. Her presence in Lethe House changes everybody´s lives, including Ian Carrick´s.
Though Selena´s health condition improves day by day, she cannot remember a bit of her past life. She has to relearn everything, even speaking and thinking. After so much trying, Carrick gets discouraged and he decides to find some help out of Lethe House. He contacts a prominent doctor and former colleague, who gives him no hope for Selena. In his way back to Lethe House, Ian decides posting notices about this lost woman. To his surprise when he reaches Lethe House, the inmates ___ as the patients are used to calling themselves ___ together with Selena have become into a family. There have been mayor changes in the place, and Selena has learnt many new things with the inmates´ help. Her presence has brought life to these forsaken neglected human beings.
Selena´s caring attitude for others and her simplicity to explain life´s issues makes Ian fall in love with her. Well, in fact both of them fall in love with each other. For all of them at Lethe House, life makes sense now. But all this happines changes when someone comes to Lethe House, and he identifies himself as Selena´s husband. She doesn´t remember him, but even so she goes with him because one of her many virtues is being
honorable. She is taken away leaving Ian with his heart broken but with a new vision of himself, a better soul, a better man. After some time has passed, destiny brings her back to Ian´s side. Her husband Elliot has been shot accidentally, and she decides taking him to Lethe House because she knows only Ian can save Elliot´s life. Carrick, who has learnt to be honorable for that is what Selena has taught him to be, not without certain
reluctance, saves Elliot . Time comes for Selena to depart again; the only thought of her departure breaks Ian´s hearth to pieces...
