Afghan Physician, Khalid Hosseini has won New York Times #1 Best Seller for his first book The Kite Runner. It tells a story of cruelty, friendship, redemption and ove. It is placed in the era of the ending years of monachry in Afghanistan, just before the Russian invasion.
In this book, the narrator is the ten year old boy who lives with his father and enjoys the luxuries of a proper education and a comfortable bed. He tells us how he befriends his servant's son, hassan and his faliure to defend him when he neede him the most!
Then the war begins and Amir and his father seeks asylumin the United States, where they settle in Califormia. Amir's father otherwise known as Baba in the book, works odd jobs to give his sonan education he deserves. Much in the future, Amir is settled in the environment and is married; however, the guilt that he had not defended his friend way back at home, in Afghanistan, lingers with himand haunts him. The worry for his friend keeps him awake at night and doesnot let him rest. It is not until a call from a relative that he is forced to go back to Afghanistan, only to witness the tyranical rule of the Taliban.
Amir comes across his old nemesis, now a Taliban leader. It his here where the struggle for Amir begins. A journey of deceptions and twists gives the book more of a folk tale essence. However, it is Amir's compassion and determination for redemption of his youthful cowardice that he wins us over.
This is a small story where he describes the fragility of friendship over a period of time and the intense degree of conscience. Khalid Hosseini gives his reader a clear cut of the historical background of Afghanistan and how its people have struggled over the time to come out victorious, midst of violence existing in the country.
A fantastic novel! Kite runner is a book which depicts a real life scenario of Afghan custom. It can be read and enjoyed by both teenagers and adults. The story is quiet intriguing and once started the reader will continue to flip pages right till the end.
