Marley and Me

Book Review by: slowwater

Original Author: John Grogan

Filled with antics, love and laughter, this is a book that will tug at the heartstrings of the reader without

a doubt. This is a book that can make you laugh aloud at times and still make you misty eyed. The key message that the author communicates is that, if we as humans choose to look then even a dog can teach valuable lessons about life. The novel is incredibly easy to read and hard to put down. In a most enchanting fashion author has managed to mingle life as it is in a city with the simple joys of living in rustic house in the country side.

The novel begins with the adoption of Marley, a golden Labrador retriever by the John the protagonist of the story and his wife Jenny. From the moment Marley enters their home, their lives change. Marley is always up to some sort of mischief or another; he is either leaping on guests or chewing though a cushion. Unknown to his owners Marley is actually ‘sub-normal.’ This however is not a dangerous affliction; it makes Marley rather like a mad hatter of a dog. Obedience and Marley are two words that can never be used in the same sentence, he and his owner are actually asked to leave obedience school on their second day.

As the story develops Marley grows up and so do his owners. Desperate for children the couple first suffers a miscarriage but eventually manage to have three children. The first half describes life in the city with its fast cars, restaurants and even crime while the later half of the book deals with life in the country side full of snow, wood fires and cherry trees.

“Marley and me” is rather refreshing, in the sense that unlike other stories about dogs or even pets, this novel does not biography the life of a dog who is too good to be true but rather this is about a dog whom the author describes as being ‘the worst dog in the world.’

A story about a dog, but with a twist unlike other stories about dogs who are too good to be true this story is about a dog who is too naughty to be normal. The novel revolves around the mischief Marley a golden Labrador retriever adopted by the protagonist John and his wife Jenny.. This book has a lot of those laugh a loud moments where one cannot help but be tickled by the deliciously witty manner in which the antics of Marley are described. All in all a good read for a lazy afternoon. If you own a dog then this book will make you recall all those less than perfect moments or your dog and even if you don’t own a dog, Marley will undoubtedly put a smile on your face.
