Bliss

Book Review by: penn

Original Author: O.Z. Livaneli
Like Istanbul, the Turkish city touching two continents, the main characters in “Bliss” find themselves touched by the dichotomies
of modernity and tradition.  Through these individuals, Levaneli shares a view of Turkey as a nation uncertain of its true nature.  The freedom of secularism vies for dominance with the security of religious tradition.  Questions of identity and place disturb the protagonists.  They learn about themselves while meeting others.  The novel’s characters fill the pages with anguish, loss and delight.  Cemal, Meryem and Irfan seem representative facets of Turkish life.  The discharged soldier, Cemal feels compelled to follow the directives of his father, primarily due to fear.  Acquaintance with the brutality of war leaves the young man emotionless and directionless.  Cemal’s measured feelings of omnipotence and dread follow him after his separation from the military.  Irfan, a prosperous academic, experiences the immobilizing force of futility.  Professor Kurudal sees himself as someone without substance.  A detailed examination of Irfan’s psyche reveals the professor’s disillusion with modern society.  Irfan’s vision of materialistic superficiality contrasts with the depths of religiosity in Cemal’s world.  A third character, raised with religious limitations, emerges as the most dynamic element.  Intimidated through her childhood, Meryem’s victimization continues as she matures.  Her story exposes the tragedy of young women murdered by family members, so-called “honor killings,” acting as a narrative thread throughout.  Beyond generally excellent characterizations, Levaneli provides descriptive passages that further draw the reader into the tale.  Skillfully described areas near Lake Van, the various areas of urban Istanbul and the Aegean coast provide texture to the story.  “Bliss” provides a multi-layered adventure for the reader.  Cemal, Meryem and Irfan share a literary stage with the dynamic story of Turkey and its turbulent existence.
