„The key to Zion” is a fifth part of “The Zion chronicles”, and the last one. It opens in the final stages of British forces
evacuation from Palestine. The Arab Palestinians have been impatiently awaiting this day, especially Haj Amin Husseini. He is one of the Arab leaders, but it is not enough for him. He wants to be the most important of them. But instead of this, Arab power has gradually eroded.
Yehudith, the Rabbi Akiva’s daughter, get imprisoned in her room after returning from the
Hadassah Hospital. Her father doesn’t know, that he has a spy from his own, because Yehudith could hear his plans and decide, that they can’t be fulfilled.
In Hadassah Hospital, Rachel Sachar and little Tikvah were left. Rachel were there, when she heard about the battle for Kastel, where her husband was fighting. Because the news were not precise, she wasn’t sure, what happened with Moshe. In the meantime, Moshe got to know about an attack on Hadassah Hospital. Because there were victims there, he wanted to find Rachel, in the same time, when she was looking for him. It wasn’t easy, because the way was shut by Arab forces. Finally, they met each other in the university building, where Moshe had worked as a teacher.
David and Ellie Meyer were travelling from Italy to France by train, when they read in the newspaper about the attack on the Hadassah Hospital. Ellie’s uncle, Howard, were killed there. Because they lost tow of their companions in the rail station in Rome, they were frightened about their safety. One journalist connected them with the death of those two in Rome. So, David and Ellie had to escape from the train on the little station St. Martain, and after perilious journey they arrived to Kitzbuhel, where they stayed under false names in the small hotel.
First time, when Yehudith had an occasion to left her room, she was sent to Zionists by her father with a message for them. She should encourage them to stay and fight, because the British would not defend. But they didn’t let her come back home, and Yehudith didn’t want to do it also. From that time, she became a member of Haganah, because in those times, they all were soldiers. In a short time, she was connected with the Zionists by marriage with Dov. Unfortunately, without her father’s blessing. For him, she was dead.
Arabs had a mourning time after their fallen martyr, Ram Kadar. Sarai, young woman from the house of Husseini, was raped by some Jews, and she didn’t want to live any longer. She asked her cousin, Akhmed, to kill her. But Moshe killed Akhmed and saved her life. Against her will, he and Rachel took her to their home, because Sarai couldn’t go back to her own people. Moshe had a lot of doubts, but Rachel treated her with all her heart, because she knew, what the girl went through. Very slowly, Sarai began to open before her and receive her love. The key to her broken heart were verses from the book of Ruth. Sarai found it on her new dress, given her by Rachel. She was touched so much, that she wanted to see the celebrations of The Resurrection. Unfortunately, she was seen there by Fredrich Gerhardt, who prepared a bomb and located it under the building, when the meeting with Golda Meir and others were planned. He took Sarai from there, and Moshe had to choose, if he should rescue her, or look for a bomb and save many people. He sacrificed Sarai… But not without any sense. Sarai was forced to wed to Gerhardt, who treated her brutally. That’s why, when she heard his plans of another bomb attack, she decided to prevent it. She sacrified her life, but Moshe and Golda Meir were saved.
David and Ellie Meyer had to leave Kitzbuhel nad continue their task, which was training its pilots in fighter planes for Jewish Haganah. Ironically, the planes have brought from Germany. All of them met in Jerusalem, where the statehood of Jewish nation was declared on May, 14, 1948. This is the end of whole story.
