Woodstock or the Cavalier

Book Summary by: TelsCafe

Original Author: SIR WALTER SCOTT
Woodstock or The Cavalier is a novel by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1826.
Woodstock is a royal lodge. Sir Henry Lee,
the old Cavalier, is ranger at Woodstock. He has a daughter, Alice, who incidentally loves Everard, her cousin. Sir Lee dislikes Everard simply because he works for Cromwell.
Soon enough Woodstock is seized by Parliamentary Commissioners. However, it was withdrawn upon Everard's intervention, but in truth the order to withdraw comes from Cromwell himself. He is aware of Woodstock's royal connections and hopes that Prince Charles will take refuge at Woodstock, after his defeat at Worcester.
Cromwell is right, Prince Charles does arrive but disguised as a page to the brother of Alice, Albert. The prince takes a liking on Alice and falls in love with her. This brings a conflict with Everard, although Charles has no knowledge of Everard's feelings.
Despite the situation, Everard gives word he won't betray Charles. Somehow, Cromwell finds out the presence of Charles and arrives with his men surrounding Woodstock. He orders the arrest of Everard.
Albert Lee impersonates Charles, to give way for his escape. Cromwell, furious when he finds out, orders not only the execution of Everard but the Lees. Fortunately for them, Cromwell later changes his mind and pardons them.
Meanwhile, Charles has left a parting message with his loyal friends at Woodstock, reconciling Sir Henry and Everard. Alice and Everard are now able to marry. It's a happy ending.
