Intuition

Book Review by: mcari

Original Author: Allegra Goodman
Allegra Goodman is very clear on her beliefs of what is most important to being a good scientist. She makes her opinion known
through her characters. My opinion of scientists has always been that they are devoid of emotion and feeling. I viewed them as methodical and reserved, reclusive and boring. I never imagined that they had personal lives. Allegra Goodman shows another side to scientists that puts humanness to them. Although we know that in every discipline there are those who we believe are not quit ethical, she gives us an inside look at the tensions and conflicts that move people to make decisions that may not necessarily abide by their standards.
We never know what goes on in someone else’s house, we can only imagine. When we have preconceived ideas about what makes a person, we do not separate the person from the profession, our opinions, and views are limited. It is hard to imagine that scientists are influenced by their personal needs and goals. Intuition gives us an inside look at real people dealing with real conflicts, successes and disappointment. Although I read a variety of topics, I do not usually gravitate to this type of book. The glimpse of the human side of science that has kept my attention. This was a book worth reading.
