The human citizens of the planet Earth have been overtaken by a species that call themselves "souls". The souls
have infiltrated all parts and human existence and have replaced the more aggressive elements with their own influences: no currency, better healing, very few weapons, pleasant people and kind words. There are still some human "rebels" and that is where our story begins. An adult human woman named
Melanie is captured by the Seekers and has a soul implanted, but Melanie refuses to give up her body and her wishes to the entity which possesses her. This is a story of the human condition, and gives one point of view of how things could be in a more perfect world.
I found this book frightfully slow reading. It was almost a chore to get through the first few
chapters to actually find out what was going on in the story. Once through the first four or five chapters, the story moved along quite well and was easier to read. In my opinion, this is not one of Miss Meyer's better works. There is very little in the way of believable interaction between the human characters, at least from my point of view, and what there was did not carry the story well enough. It left me with a feeling of relief that I could finally be done reading it and get on with my life.
