Paul Coelho-is the proud
writer of - “The Alchemist” , translated in English by
Alan. R. Clarke. The hero of
the novel is a shepherd boy
named Santiago. I can assure you that this book is a
reader’s delight. The story starts with the hero taking
shelter in an abandoned church with his sheep. During the
night’s sleep boy had a dream and that was not the first
time he had that dream. He dreamt about a
treasure that was
embedded somewhere in the pyramids of Egypt. In the course
of his search for the treasure, he met many people and
acquired lots of knowledge. Other significant characters in
the novel were the boy’s father, a gypsy who could
interpret dreams, the King of Salem- Melchizedek, a crystal-
merchant in whose shop the boy worked for a long time, an
Englishman who was avid about alchemy, Fatima- the boy’s
love interest, and the alchemist who led the boy to his
treasure. A reader can also find the fragrance of a sweet
romance in the story but the concept of the story never
shifts from the boy’s search for treasure. The writer
attracts the reader’s attention all through the novel with
some catchy statements about intuition being a sudden
immersion of the soul into the current of life; death’s
being as important or unimportant on any given day; the
universe’s conspiracy to help a
person achieve his dream
when he really desires something; that any search begins
with a ‘beginner’s luck’ but the person carrying out the
search is severely tested before he finds any treasure; and
that only the fear of failure can make a dream impossible
to achieve.
