The suffer of the young Werther

Book Review by: Montgomery21

Original Author: Johann Wolfgang Goethe
Goethe’s Werther is written in the form of letters and can be called the first modern love story. The work appeared in 1774
in a literature epoch which is known as a storm and pressure or genius time. The elemental force of the words with which the author describes his story developed itself into the booster of the storm and pressure, a strong literary reaction at the clarification time oriented to reason. The book met the spirit of the times because it set sensations and feelings consciously against the rationality of the clarification time. In all social classes of its time the novel belonged to the required reading because it touched the bent reader in two kinds emotionally. On the one hand the readers felt sympathy for the central figure unhappily in love whose complicated feeling world did him at the same time endearingly and pitiable. On the other side the epistolary novel could be understood at the same moment also as an accusation to the state society which permitted no space to the individual troubles and needs of the separate. Up to a certain degree the business of the novel is based on events which the author himself lives through. That must lead to the conclusion that there were autobiographic traits processed. The trivially the story at first may also sound the seriously were the consequences for a whole generation. First of all, the clergy knocked itself not only against the fact that in the novel a suicide was made a subject of discussion, but rather that for this still understanding was demanded of the reader. This provocation against the morality was still strengthened, as subsequently increases suicide cases were known which were inspired obviously by the novel. The victims committed the suicide namely in the Werther gaps and partly with the booklet in the pocket. The author dissociated himself from these events and resisted against the reproach, his novel can be needed as a manual for fellow sufferer. The so called “Werther-effect” has been taken in dependence on this novel in the 20th century in the sociology. Besides, it is about a suicide which is committed according to models in the media.
