TEN OBCY (The Stranger) by I. Jurgielewiczowa

Book Review by: Kamillia

Original Author: Kamillia
During the argument Zenek sneers at his friend''s excitement. Afterwards, feeling offended by their accusations he leaves
the island. After it got dark the boy turns up in Ula''s father garden to tell her good bye. He tells her he stole the money, because he was hungry and didn''t have any cash to get himself anything to eat.  Zenek confesses that Ula is is the only one for him in this world and after that he disappears. As days pass by slowly children are getting bored. All four of them feel that not everything has been explained and that they have passed their judgement on Zenek too rashly. All of them miss the boy. Even Ula starts to avoid attending group meetings more often. The girl vanishes from the house for long hours, comes back late in the evening sleepy and exhausted. She reveals her secret to Pestka whilst one of their conversations. After her father refused to lend her the money for unknown purpose, she goes to work to pick the blueberries. She does that to earn money which she can give back to a local vendor whom Zenek has robbed. Soon his debt will be paid off.Feverish search of Zenek remained fruitless. However, one day Julek meets Zenek in the market in Lętów. The boy is filthy, wearing dirty ragged clothes. He played cards with some local fellows and doesn''t really wanna come back to Olszyn with Julek.  Even the fact that Ula has given back the money to a vendor doesn''t makes him go back to the island.
