In the silence of court rooms, a man
was made to stand trial for selling a novel by title - THE SEVEN
MINUTES,
by JJ Jadway. The novel once banned, was re-published in
America by a famous
publisher. Some felt that the novel is the
brilliance of the
author where as some felt that the same is
obsene.
If we read the first two to three pages of the novel, one cannot sleep without completing last page.
Though the novel was named THE SEVEN MINUTES, in fact it is the name of the novel that stands trial in the court.
Mike Barrett was forced to take up the defence of the novel in the
court. He takes up the defence of the novel, because he believes
that this a book worthy of defending it.
The publisher happens to be one of the close friends of Mike
Barrett who helps him in his college days for continuity of his
studies. The publisher, asks Mike Barrett that first read the
book. If he still feels that the book nothing, do not take up the
case.
The publisher also tells Barrett that he is ready to forego money on
the novel for helping his friend to take up the big position of |Vice
president in the mega firm.
After reading the novel, Mike takes up case and starts
investigation of his own about the author. Some of the
comtemporaries of JJ Jadway, the writer, say that the author committed
after writing the book. But his investigations reveal that the
author is not only alive but is the one who is going to be the Chief
Justice of USA.
Through out the book the author - IRVING WALLACE, appeals to the
readers that any book must be read in total but not in parts.
Because reading any book in parts will vitiate the actual theme.
The arguments for and against the book were brilliantly dealt with by
the author. Especially, one of the witnesses - the average woman,
produced by the petitioners is just a good idea and dealt with nicely.
All the characters were brilliantly created.
A nice novel.
The novel was first published in the year 1969 by the New English Library Ltd.
I also read some other books of IRWING WALLACE but this particular book is a brilliant work of the author.
