This is literary editor Erica Wagner''''s first novel. The tale is about a woman named Janet who represses her need for
solitude while in a dormant relationship with a violinist. Her life veers off on a tangent when one day, she
finds out that her motherhad not, as she had believed,
died when she was three. Instead her mother died just three weeks before, leaving her an old cottage by the sea. Janet is still reeling from the shock of this revelation when she embarks on a journey hoping to find traces of her motherand to take possession of her unexpected legacy. There, she finds Tom, a struggling car mechanic who scours the beaches for metal scraps from which he creates masks. Their encounter reveals how their histories are interwoven, and disturbs the
loneliness to which both have become accustomed. This is a richly textured portrait of solitude and how
lonely people come together.
