David Copperfield , one of the great
novels of all time, portrays the life of a poor boy. He struggled
hard for his existence in this world. This novel was written by one of the greatest English novelists of nineteenth century,
Charles Dickens . The author was poor himself in his childhood. Most of his
novels depict his own life experiences. Plunging into the novel, we find many miseries in David''s life. Before six months David was born, his father dies. He was brought up by his mother and servant. When he was young, his mother
marries another man, who is cruel towards David. On reading the cruel blows david gets, our eyes are filled with tears.
His school life too is miserable. He was treated very bad and beaten often. All the boys there were cruel towards him. At this juncture his mother dies. This makes David depressed. Misery continues in his youth stage too. He wash bottles for livelihood. Then his aunt helps him to study law. Meanwhile he discovers a fraud in his office and makes the culprit to condone. He marries a gorgeous gal and the story finds a happy ending.
Most of Dickens'' novels are about his own experiences of life. His own early poverty helped him to understand the lives of poor people. He wrote about them with understanding and sympathy. He showed the suffering caused by cruel laws, and in this way his books led to many social reforms.
