THE
SUCCESSOR BY FRANCIS D IMBUGA. The Successor by Francis Imbuga focusses on the struggle for power among the people of Masero-a semi modern state led by Emporer Chonda and deputized by Jandi, Oriomra and Sasia in order of seniority.
The drama revolves around Oriomra’s attempt to eliminate the other leaders and successed to the throne of Masero. He does this by first prompting the Emporer to name his successor and getting rid of his rivals to the race to the throne. He convinces the interpretor Dr See through to interprate Chonda’s dream to his wish that he should name his successor immedietly.
There is no level playing field in Africa as illustrated by Oriomra’s behaviour. Consequently, Jandi is accused of Incest, e is tried and banished. Oriomra partly realizes his dreams however, events turn on Oriomra who falls and Jandi becomes the undisputed successor.
Right on the start, the text creates a mood of political hoplessness characterized by the doom and gloom that hangs over Masero. The state lacks in this and the society is in the process of disintergration.
The hooting of an owl welcomes Zira and we know
bad things are about to
happen.
Zira is a symbol of the
country, so the bad things to happen are going to affect the country. Therefore the arrival of Zira foregrounds what will eventually happen later in the text. The
seed planted in Zira’s womb is a bad seed and the bad seed is going to affect the country.
The successor is one of Professor Imbuga’s great pieces of work on drama. He also has his name to The Burning of Rags, Aminata among other plays.
