Othello

Book Summary by: judd

Original Author: Shakespeare

Othello was a brave general who secretly married the gentle and fare Desdemona, daughter of Brabantio, because

he knew that Brabantio would not accept him as he was dark skinned. The secret was revealed when Iago and Roderigo informed Brabantio about the elopement of Desdemona with Othello. Iago had been nursing a bitter hatred towards Othello for preferring Cassio as his lieutenant instead of him. But for now Iago had to show loyalty towards Othello. He warned Othello that Brabantio was looking for him .

Brabantio approached to Othello with some soldiers and challenged him for fight . As he drew his sword, Othello refused his challenge. Later the old Senator bestowed his daughter upon Othello and said he was glad that he had no other children, as this experience would have made him a tyrant towards the others. Desdemona insisted on going with him.

Roderigo was distressed at the way things had turned out, because he had wanted to marry Desdemona. Iago told him that Desdemona would soon tire of her husband .But when he was alone; Iago began plotting revenge against Othello. He tried to put Desdemona down in eyes of Othello. In an event at Cyprus, Desdemona upon landing there, the courteous Cassio greeted Desdemona and kissed her hand. He told Roderigo that Desdemona was tiring of Othello and had fallen in love with Cassio, mentioning as proof the fact that she encouraged him to kiss her hand. He told him that Desdemona would surely fall in love with him once Cassio is out of the way .He setup a fight of Roderigo and Cassio at Othello’s wedding and victory .Othello was disgusted to see his lieutenant fighting with the governor of Cyprus , and that too in such a state ! Othello removed Cassio from the post. Later Cassio asked Iago for advice. Iago suggested that Desdemona could best plead his case. Later Desdemona pleaded with Othello to forgive Cassio. Othello could deny her nothing but he said he would decide the time to receive Cassio in his favor again. Like this only, Iago did many other attempts which would make Othello believe that there is an affair between Desdemona and Cassio. At last, when Othello could not control his anger, he reached Desdemona’s bedroom, kissed her and killed her. Emilia rushed into the room and told the truth to Othello and at that moment was stabbed by Iago .He tried to escape but was caught and arrested. Othello after realizing his mistake due to his foolishness committed suicide.
