"Aureng-Zebe" is a
heroic tragedy play by
John Dryden. It was prublished 1676.
The setting of the play is in Mogul India.
It concerns the love of Aureng-Zebe for Indamora, a captive queen. Their love becomes entangled with a struggle for power in the court of Aureng-Zebe's father, the Mogul emperor, Shah Jehan. Both the emperor Shah Jehan and Morat, his son by his second wife, Nourmahal, pursue Indamora.
Despite this, Auren-Zebe remains loyal to his father. After the struggle for the throne that leads to the deaths of both Morat and Nourmahal, Shah Jehan rewards Aureng-Zebe by abandoning his pursuit of Indamora.
