This book is a discussion and a pracical workbook in various styles of
acting as appropriate to the various styles,
of play and of production.
In addition to detailed discussions of the various styles in each
chapter (from classical Greek to modern
experimental styles, and many
in between), there are summary tables at the end of the book of the
various styles, as well as a character analysis form (blank) and a
10-point actor's
preparation list.
This book discusses the Stanislavsky "Method" acting technique, as well
as the more traditional technical role preparation, and such
experimental styles as Brecht's objectification techniques. This is not
only a thought-provoking look at acting, it is a very practical took
for development as an actor.
There are lists of books on plays, staging, acting, costume, music, and
dance, and other subjects desirable for play production, as well as
lists of plays (and authors) using various styles and of particular
periods. Ther is also a very thorough index.
This book is interesting, not only to an actor or director, but also to
the playgoer or movie buff interested in the craft and its results. It
opens an entirely new way of looking at many aspects of the dramatic
art.
